When the federal government passed the City of Summerside's port lands to the newly created Summerside Port Corporation in 2010, it presented a huge opportunity for the city to revitalize and refresh its downtown core. The port itself will continue to deliver economic benefits, moving goods on and off the island, but the land it needs for shipping and shipbuilding is much smaller. As a result of the shift in stewardship, a large amount of developable land (as much as 2 hectares) opened up along the waterfront. Several years later, Holland College, Spinnaker's Landing, the Silver Fox Yacht Club and the Loyalist Inn (among others) anchor a waterfront getting ready for further revitalization.
In 2013-14, Ekistics helped the port develop principles and a vision for a solid waterfront plan. After that process was complete, the Summerside Port Authority brought together the city, the Downtown Summerside Business Improvement District and the Summerside Regional Development Corporation to extend and connect the waterfront with the city's historic downtown area.
This stage of the plan will build an implementation strategy for a combined waterfront and downtown plan looking at the evolution of the area over the next 25 years. Come and provide your thoughts, guidance and insight into this important initiative for the City.
