FARMERS' MARKET TO OPEN DOWNTOWN NEXT MONTH

SUMMERSIDE - A farmers' market will take root in the Holman Building.

"It's all coming together far better than we could ever have imagined," said Arthur Davies in an interview.

Davies is an organic farmer from Linkletter and he serves on the executive of the co-operative running the Summerside farmers' market. He explained they hope to open in mid-June. The market will go in the basement (former home of the Heritage Pub) of the downtown building, with the entrance on the south side parking lot. Davies expects to start with about 20 vendors on Saturday mornings.

Visitors will have the chance to pick up a variety of items including meat, baking, produce, cheese and plants. Both organic and conventionally farmed items will be available. The market will also provide a place where people can grab breakfast or just chat. Davies said improvements are being made to the space including opening up windows.

"It will be nice and bright and a beautiful place," he said. They hope to have the market running year-round. Local producers offered a market from Three Oaks High School last year but had been seeking a permanent location. Davies said they hope to attract more vendors and a market manager. For more information on the cooperative and market, contact Davies at 436-3155/ 436-5180 or Jennifer Campbell at 658-2148.
