- Workers gain skills while renovating Summerside landmarks A group of unemployed Islanders will have the chance to develop construction skills while redeveloping Summerside properties under a new SkillsPEI program, says Allan Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. Under a job experience partnership between the Summerside Regional Development Corporation (SRDC) and the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, up to 10 people will be hired for a 14-week work term and given the chance to work on important business projects including the Holman Building and the Water Street incubator mall. “By working with experienced supervisors from the construction industry, these program participants will have the chance to acquire construction skills including carpentry, electrical work and bricklaying,” said Mr. Campbell. “We expect that for many of the program participants this experience could be the beginning of a career in the construction industry.” “Based on previous experience with similar projects, we are pleased to partner with the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning on this new initiative,” said Arnold Croken, General Manager of SRDC. “The project will provide participants real hands-on experience in their selected trade of choice while at the same time demonstrate their interest, desire and skill to future potential trades employers. We anticipate this will be a win/win for all parties involved,” said Mr. Croken. The expected cost of the project is $255,000 ($225,000 from SkillsPEI and $30,000 from SRDC) and it is open to unemployed persons who are not eligible for employment insurance. Support for the project is being provided by SkillsPEI, under the Labour Market Agreement – a joint effort of the federal and provincial governments. -
