MINISTER CONGRATULATES SUMMERSIDE MAYOR BASIL STEWART
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour issued congratulations to Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart following his election as President of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities (FCM) in Whistler, British Columbia this weekend. “I am pleased to congratulate Mayor Stewart on his election as President of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities,” said Carolyn Bertram, Minister Responsible for Municipal Affairs. “This is the first time a mayor from Prince Edward Island has served as FCM President since 1955. Mayor Stewart has been a powerful voice for the City of Summerside and his commitment to the people of the city, and to our province, are examples of the skills he will draw upon in his newest role with the FCM.” Basil Stewart was elected as Mayor of Summerside in 1985 and has served as mayor for the last 24 years. He has served as Third Vice-President of FCM since June 2006. He received the Canada 125 Medal in 1992 and was named Summerside Citizen of the Year in 1989. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities represents the interests of municipalities on policy and program matters that fall within federal jurisdiction. More than 1,775 members represent Canada’s cities, urban and rural communities, and 18 provincial and territorial municipal associations. The FCM works on issues including Municipal Infrastructure, Immigrant Settlement, Public Safety, Affordable Housing and Homelessness, Public Transit, and Environment and sustainable development. The 72nd Annual Conference and Municipal Expo is being held in Whistler, British Columbia.
