Prince County benefits from government funds
Prince County benefits from government funds In Charlottetown Thursday, Gail Shea, Egmont MP and federal Fisheries minister, and P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz announced federal and provincial funding worth more than $64.2 million for Island infrastructure projects. That spending includes a shot in the arm for a number of projects here. The Summerside Regional Development Corp. will get more than $1.13 million, two-thirds of a project worth almost $1.7 million, to rebuild the seawall around the marina. “This is great news,” said Arnold Croken, of the development corporation. The project will fix corroding wall running from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, behind Access PEI and Harbourfront Theatre, along the eastern side of Spinnakers’ Landing. “There’s been a severe amount of erosion that has occurred behind that wall as a result of the holes that have rusted in it. It actually has threatened the buildings along there in terms of their stability,” Croken explained. The existing wall will get capped with concrete and soil added behind it. Croken hoped construction would start within six weeks. The area boardwalk will get replaced in this or another project. The City of Summerside will receive funding for several projects: $2.4 million toward $3.6 million worth of work to the West End boardwalk and shoreline protection, close to $5 million towards roadwork, and others. “We’re going to try to do all of this work this year,” said financial services director Malcolm Millar. Technical services director Aaron MacDonald explained funding will go towards extending the boardwalk further along Mackenzie Drive almost to the former Dynasty Spa. The shoreline will be protected from erosion using armour stone. Money for roads means more paving than usual. MacDonald expected the bulk of Water Street from Read’s Corner to the West End would get resurfaced. “Trying to get it back up to a higher standard,” he explained. Money will also go towards continuing work downtown to improve that street and the look of downtown. Slemon Park Corp. didn’t receive money directly but will benefit through a federal-provincial project to pave the access road to Hangar 8, home to aerospace companies and hundreds of employees. “That’s been a priority road for us for 17 years,” said Slemon Park Corporation President Shawn McCarvill. “It’s great to see it happening.” Prince County jobs Here is the list of local infrastructure projects confirmed Thursday.
